Raven-Symoné Covers Rolling Out, Talks Transformation

I was pleasantly surprised to see a new television commercial for a show, starring Ms. Raven Symoné. The State of Georgia, an ABC Family sit-com, is slated to be the 25 year-old's first (slightly more) "grown-up" role. During the media rounds to promote this project, the inevitable topic of her weight loss continues to take a presence. And she's sticking to her guns about how she did - with a twist. Featured on the cover of this month's Rolling Out, the star shared details about her career, success and new figure:

ROMag: People are excited about your new figure. How did you achieve it?
Raven: During “That’s So Raven,” I dealt with stress that an average 15-year-old might not go through, and my body showed those stresses on the outside. Doctors say that stress kills and that stress manifests itself in different ways. For me, and the way my genes are, I happened to get a little thicker. After “That’s So Raven” ended, the weight of the world was off of my shoulders. I was able to look at what was going on with me, instead of finding comfort in things that might not be the healthiest. By releasing those issues, my stress went away internally as well as externally.
ROMag: Did exercise play a role?

Raven: I’ve been exercising since I was 9 years old. I was on tour with ‘N Sync, and I did my own tour. Anyone who has been on tour knows that it’s excessive training all day. I have had the same exercise routine my entire life.

From her responses, it can be gathered, that not only stress but the activities - food even, that she looked to as a coping method when she felt under pressure, led to her unhealthy state. When the story first broke of her changes, people were not buying the "less stress" only factor. As it's sometimes easy to see weight loss or improved health as black or white; eat right and exercise; calories in/calories out; I, however, still applaud Raven for recognizing and addressing her real trigger/s. I hope that she'll be successful in maintaining focus on underlying issues and stress, as she hops back into the acting limelight!

The State of Georgia premiers Wednesday, June 29th at 8:00pm EST on ABC Family

Wednesday | Doing More & Marathon Virgins

There used to be  a time when I could casually walk 30 minutes around my hood 'burb, drink 64oz. of water, eat 1,700 calories a day and the weight would drip off. Not anymore. I've come to the realization, that in order to continue my weight loss, body construction and strength development - I must do more. Simply put, the stuff I did before, will not cut it anymore. Thanks to metabolic, hormonal and physical changes - requirements have gravely shifted. Instead of getting frustrated by this, however, I see it as a compliment. Like my body is saying 'okay, you've mastered that, now it's time to go to the next level.' I'm delving into the challenge.

In the midst of my 'do more' revelation, I started officially training for my October marathon, this past Monday. Yes, my Summer is destined to be full of pain, tears and extra sweat. Oh, and a few expletives, I'm sure. The run group clinic I attended with the hubby (he's not racing, but has decided to train with me - yay!), was very comforting. I was placed in the "Marathon Virgins" group with 16 other determined newbies. We broke the ice, told of our backgrounds and was asked to share any potential fears/challenges. I, of course, told them of my MS. One woman said with shock, "People run marathons to honor people with MS, I've never heard of an actual runner with it!" My reply was, "True. I'm blessed to be an active and functional person with MS. I'm going to try and run as many marathons as I can, while I'm in this fortunate phase of it." And damnit, if I don't mean it! I'll definitely share updates about that journey, so stay tuned!

Really? | Fried Kool-Aid & Heidi Montag's Non-Believable Workout

If you're on Twitter, over the last few days on its trending list, you may have had the curiosity of finding out why "Fried Kool-aid" has kept its spot in visibility. Or not. Well ... my curiosity got the best of me, unfortunately. I'm convinced that we are going to run out of things to fry one day. Diabetes and hypertension, win again:

Sharing with US Weekly, the attention-craving reality star, Heidi Montag, claims to have worked out for 14 hours a day, over the last two months. As a result, she has shed 27 pounds. Umm ... The Biggest Loser contestants don't e'en workout that much! Motivated by a pool party invite and subsequent weight gain following recovery from 10 plastic surgeries, she says that her call time for exercise began at 5am and concluded at 7pm. Right. This is so unbelievable ... literally. And troubling, that such behavior would even be praised or seen as acceptable. Exercise addiction is real and is usually accompanied by disordered eating habits and/or body dysmorphic disorder. This boast also comes off as a shot to our intelligence as it appears to be physically impossible - for someone who is not an athlete.
"I've been working out really hard because I had this pool party and I was like, I have to be in shape," she told US Weekly. "And I was actually a lot overweight. It was the most I've ever been because I've kind of been in hiding eating pie with my husband and puppies, so I needed to get back in shape." At her heaviest, The Hills veteran weighed 130 pounds; she's currently back down to 103 - US Weekly
You know, I can't put too much stock into this headline. I mean, her and equally-annoying husband Spencer Pratt, admitted to faking a divorce to stay relevant in the media. So, this could very well just be another tactic to get back on the scene after her knifed-up hiatus. She succeeded.

Links | It's Bob Harper's Turn to Push Pills + J-Hud Rep Denies Surgery Rumors

Despite Jillian Michaels' weight loss supplement lawsuit scare - the line has been a successful one, in regards to sales. And it looks like her Biggest Loser training counter-part, Bob Harper, is getting in on the profits party, too.  When both of America's "toughest (media) trainers," resort to selling pills ... what is to be implied? What's even more chuckle-worthy is the fact that the line is called SMART, with a tag line of "The Smarter Way to Lose Weight." Bob, you know you don' f@#*ed up, right?

Screamin' Jenny, strutting it on the GMA
stage.
Last week, following her Good Morning America Summer Concert Series performance, Jennifer Hudson was whisked away to the hospital due to severe stomach pains. I knew it wouldn't be long before it was assumed that her sudden ailment was a result of complications from her alleged weight loss surgery. In defense of these accusations, people from Jennifer's camp have been making the facts known. Is the idea of massive weight loss for Black women, that far-fetched? Is it really hard to believe she did this without an operation or ... crack? Geez.
"Lap Band Surgery is the first thing out of haters mouths when a woman of color loses a large amount of weight, not so fast.

The Facts: Jennifer’s weight loss journey lasted 20 months (not 3 or 6) and it began days after her son’s birth in August of 2009. Her journey began by walking several miles a day and totally changing her eating habits. For a year she ate nothing but baked chicken or fish with brown rice and veggies and lost only about 20 pounds or so. Racked with frustration Jenn switched over to Weight Watchers which taught her portion control and the right combinations of food. WW in tandem with a 5-6 day a week workout routine caused the pounds to fall off.
Jennifer does not eat tiny bites, she eats a full meal 5 times or so a day. She did not have Lap Band or any other type of weight loss surgery, period.
Just because Star Jones lied does not mean that every Black woman lies about her weight loss journey. And do you really believe that Weight Watchers would open themselves to possible lawsuits of false advertising for Jennifer Hudson? I think not."
Welp.

Fat Joe is now Skinny Joe? Bronx Rapper Sheds 88 Pounds

Earlier in the week, Joseph Antonio Cartagena bka rapper Fat Joe, dropped a new video. Ironically entitled Drop a Body, he looks to have lost at least a half of one. Boasting an 88 pound transformation, the protégé of late rapper Big Pun - who succumbed to heart disease in 2000 - eludes that the fear of facing the same fate, is what whipped him into shape:
“I always loved being fat, obviously. I’m Fat Joe. The biggest killer of people is food. It kills more people than AIDS or gun violence or war, anything you can name. Everybody keep catching strokes and heart attacks, and what happened to me was, like seven of my friends passed last year from heart attacks, and they were all 32, 34 years old, 35. What’s the difference between me and them? Health doesn’t discriminate just because I’m famous. And I said, 'I got kids, I can't leave 'em like that.' This world is too hard for me to leave my kids, without me supervising and being there for them.”
The Lean Back performer, is said to have lost the weight by coupling 2-hour cardio and weight lifting sessions with proper eating habits. He swapped all of his fast food favorites, for smaller portioned meals of fruit, veggies and lean meats.

When asked about whether he'll change his name, he shared:
“They’re all trying to alter my name, but I can’t see myself as anything else,” he said, referring to friends who started calling him 'Skinny Joe' and 'Joey Flaco' (Spanish for “thin”). “I think I gotta ask Diddy what my new name is.”
I'm still on non-speaking terms with Diddy, due to his decision to name himself "Swag" for a week. So, hopefully Joey will consult with someone else.

Jill Scott Talks 50-Pound Weight Loss

"In the hood, I gain weight - I was pregnant. I lose weight - I'm on crack." - Jill Scott

Ain't that how it goes, lol!? Gracing the cover of June's Ebony magazine, in celebration of Black Music Month, singer/actress Jill Scott is serving it - as usual! And if you notice, she's serving it about 50 pounds lighter. Give or take some standard Photoshop practices.

Jill Scott in-studio at "The Big Tigger Morning Show with Free"
During a recent interview with BET legends - turned AM DJs, Free and Big Tigger ... the Philadelphia native attests her recent weight loss success to being inspired by motherhood. She wanted to "be there" for her 2 year-old son. And not just in the sense of living, but being able to climb, run and jump right alongside him. She also sings the praises of her non-conventional personal trainer; who makes working out, not feel like working out. That's always a win!

Jilly from Philly is another person in the limelight - who reveres her weight loss as an obvious choice, aimed at better health. It doesn't add, nor negate to the awesome woman and performer that she is. And that rocks:
"People make a big deal out of this 'Oh you lost weight!' 'Oh you gained weight!' I'm used to this. I'm still me. Losing weight or gaining weight does not make me any smarter. It doesn't make me any more sexy. It doesn't make me more... anything. I'm still me."
With 11 years in the mainstream game, being her  - is clearly a winning formula. Her fourth studio album, Light of the Sun, will be released June 21st.

P.S. Is her latest song, So in Love With You, with Anthony Hamilton NOT the jam, though!? Whooo child!

Jennifer Hudson to Pen Memoir About Weight Loss

It's been rumored that Grammy and Oscar award-winning entertainer, Jennifer Hudson and agent have been trying to shop the idea of sharing her weight loss journey via book, for a few years now. However, since she was not ready, nor willing to disclose information concerning the violent tragedy that claimed the lives of her mother and young nephew in 2008 - it was perceived that the project investment was not a sure bet. She, however, vehemently dispelled that being the reason for not landing a deal sooner.

Despite the reasonings for those passing on the proposal before, Dutton Books has stepped up, agreed to her terms (monetarily and subject matter-wise) and signed a projected $1M deal with the star, to publish. Releasing the following statement about the currently untitled publication:

"Jennifer wants to inspire anyone coping with weight issues, share some of her own best tips for losing and maintaining weight loss, fitting in exercise and keeping it fun."

The book will also highlight her relatable experiences with being raised in an atmosphere that was not conducive to healthy living. And of course, her challenges with being an 'overweight' American Idol contestant.

Inspired by motherhood, Jennifer Hudson revealed that she went from a size 16 to 6 and lost 80 pounds within a 2-year span, with the help of WeightWatchers®. It looks like this ride is only just beginning for J-Hud and her journey. So, I take it - we'll be hearing ... "it's a neeeeeew dayyyyyyyeee" on commercials a little while longer.

Losing Weight the Right, Wrong, Hard + Easy Way

"You lost weight the right way."

I received this compliment the other day, from a co-worker. And all I could think of saying was ... "You think you know, but you have no idea!" Prior to that, she was belittling another woman in the office who has lost over 100 pounds, following bariatric surgery. That apparently was "not right." I felt the need to ask her to elaborate her stance on the "right" way, though. When doctors, professionals and experts clash on the terms of effective methods of weight loss ... it's safe to say, there is not going to be a clear-cut answer, relative to such subjective beliefs. Let's break it down though - in a nutshell it seems:

Right/Hard: self-designed regimens, exercise, clean-eating
Wrong/Easy: starvation, pills, meal replacement shakes, processed food diets, surgery
Now for some transparency (I've disclosed all of this before):
  1. I started my journey with the The Master Cleanse. 10 pounds lost. Sue me.
  2. Insert a bunch of non-remember-able diet pills ... 8 pounds. SMH
  3. I lost 5 pounds, following the SlimFast plan - replaced 2 meals with shakes, ate a Lean Cuisine frozen entrée for dinner.
  4. My next 40 came off by committing to the Fat Smash Diet® and its awesome 'real food' principles.
  5. Even as a Weight Watchers® dropout, I lost 20 pounds counting those beloved POINTS.
  6. Oh, and the latest? Clean-eating and working out. A method that I plan to continue on with.
So, all that to say - my current attitude and decisions towards weight loss, did not happen overnight. It was a process. Admittedly, I turn a side-eye at many angles to diets - yet I try my best to not be judgmental, because of my past. Despite the programs/pills/crystals I shade here, frequently, I've probably been there in some similar fashion. But, it's like Jay-Z said, "Hov did that, so hopefully you wouldn't have to go through that." Yes, I just quoted Hov.

I'm no martyr, but I'd much rather help someone leverage their understanding of getting to the reality of long-term weight loss and better health, than dogging them because they're doing something in my eyes as wrong or the "easy way out." Yeah, I lost some weight through many silly methods (some very cringe-worthy) - only to find out that not all were sustainable; meaning - my life would be hell if I had to do that for the rest of it.

I've grown and I'm proud of that. The testament of my journey's success may superficially be what's on the scale - to others. But to me, it's about my path to understanding. It's about learning. It's about my evolved lifestyle. Taking those bumps and bruises and then finally seeing "the fitness/nutrition light," has been highly beneficial to the choices I make today. I can only hope that my efforts at weight loss aren't devalued, because everything I did to achieve, wasn't "right." Yet some most of us have to experience trial and error, before we finally get it.

Now, if your objective is just weight loss - I mean, is there a "wrong" way? If your mission is prolonged wellness, energy and strength - with weight loss merely being the result of lifestyle changes ... then, that might be another discussion.

While I strive for it, my journey has never been and will never be ... perfect.

I love that about it, though.

It's Some Kelly Rowlands: Singer to Release Workout DVD!

Like Pink Friday lipstick, Hervé Léger 'bandage' dresses are NOT for everybody. They seem, however, to be made for the likes of Kelly Rowland. The former Destiny's Child and current chart-topping singer, is also often seen frolicking on beaches, rocking a sickening two-piece - with the figure to match.

Well, word is, is that her ability to motivate ... will be trickling to the fitness world! Celebrity trainer, Jeanette Jenkins, took to Twitter to announce that a workout video, featuring the star, is currently in pre-production:

She's so pretty and dainty, it's a challenge trying to envision her going hard with an exercise routine - but I'm sure I'll be proven wrong. Updates and a review will definitely be forthcoming.

How Ciara Stays FIT!

While her albums (and lacefronts) aren't always a hit, those legs are! That's right, I'm talking about Atlanta's own, Ci-araaa (in my Jazze Pha voice). Known for her highly engaged choreography and ripped abs - many wonder just how she keeps it tight ... and right. She recently chatted it up with US Weekly to divulge the deets:
2011 Grammy Awards

The Go Girl singer works out for an hour, five times a week with personal trainer, Gunnar Peterson. Whose other notable clients include Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian and a host of West coast professional athletes. While she does maintain a small frame, she shares that her goal is not to be small or to lose weight:
"I can lose weight easily and I don't like to do that. I'm not trying to lose and get small. I just want to keep shape and I just want to focus on abs and glutes."
Of course she works out, Paula. Uh-duh. But what's she eating? With a life on the go, one can't adhere to a healthy eating regimen, right? Welp, the lie detector determined that that, was a lie.

The 25 year-old entertainer tries to "eat clean." Fueling up with lean proteins, fruits and veggies. But, she does partake in some things opposite of the clean eating spectrum, moderately:

"I try to eat clean, the majority of the time. You have to throw in a cheeseburger and French fries or a brownie and ice cream sometimes. I would never advise somebody to be so strict to where you don't enjoy yourself."
When asked about her global sexy stature she revealed:

“I feel the sexiest when I’m by myself, walking around nude. I have this new obsession with nudity, it’s really weird. It may sound weird, but I just really love embracing the body.”
I am not even mad. Go Ci-Ci!

Why Sensa® Makes No Sense

The hottest and sexiest season is nearing and it brings anxiety and pressure to soon flaunt that "beach body." A physique many of us set out for at the start of the year. Knowing these aspirations are a centralized focus again, weight loss plans, systems and drug marketers are hopping on the opportunity to help us out. While a few approaches have a solid, common sense foundation - others are merely gimmicks, fads not worth the paper they print their "results not typical" disclaimers on.

According to its creator, Dr. Alan Hirsch (Neurologist and Psychiatrist who specializes in the treatment of smell and taste loss), Sensa® granules or tastants, were formulated to work with the clarity of scent to kindle an area of the brain referred to as the “satiety center,” subsequently conveying a message to the user, to stop eating. All it entails is sprinkling the granules on your prepared food before dining and violà!

First off, weight loss solutions such as this, do not begin to chip away at the underlining causes of over-, binge-, or even compulsive-eating. It simply provides a temporary fix, some say placebo-ish fix, to issues that deserve greater attention than opening the contents of this small package.

This particular regimen also lacks a sound nutritional and activity plan. Proving that it only aims to address how much is eaten, without regard to what is eaten. When we all know, both, are gravely important. I suppose this is to hit home the lure that you don't have to change ... to actually change. ‘Keep consuming the sugary, sodium-laden, processed junk that lead to your current figure and we'll handle the rest!’ If that's not insulting, I don't know what is?!

What also tickles me about Sensa® branding, is that the adverts often feature a bowl of fruit, or salad. Umm, HELLURR, people are not overindulging on apples, berries and romaine lettuce! We don't need help slowing down on those things, Dr. Hirsch. I think you know that, though.

Unfortunately, many of the product's consumers don't see it this way and instead view these crystals as a grand "tool for weight loss." This leads me to a point that I ALWAYS seem to reach when it comes to contesting certain “tools." Is it sustainable? There's a plethora of items that will aide in size and scale digit reduction. Healthy or not. But, I don't foresee sprinkling these crystals on your meals, forever, as logical. Heck, Sensa® doesn’t even have an exit strategy, when queried about how long one should take it:
“There is no timeline for losing weight with SENSA®. Although many people lose weight in the very first month, everyone experiences weight loss differently. Stick with the system and you will lose weight.”
Well, that’s reassuring. Especially considering the long term effects of the "proprietary blend" of some non-natural - despite what they claim -  chemicals and neurological-altering substances, aren’t very favorable. And rightfully so, given the acute traces of monosodium glutamate/MSG (heavily controversial flavor enhancer) found in an independent study and Silica (the same stuff that comes in our shoe boxes to absorb moisture with a warning that ingestion is harmful). Among a few other questionable ingredients: listed here.

Another thought: Because you haven't organically, nor freely re-conditioned yourself to stop eating upon satiety, without 'sprinkling' ... odds are, when you cease the practice, you're likely to pick up those over indulgent habits and weight. In theory. What’s oddly overlooked these days, is that our bodies are naturally designed to relay signals that we’re full. We have, for so long, just ignored these messages. I’d certainly entertain, eating slowly and realistically assessing your true level of hunger and fullness - during meals. Something tells me, relying on that method will be immensely superior to anything a doctor can conjure up in a lab.

So, here’s my plea … don’t get sucked into those displays at Target! Turn the channel when that infomercial comes on (which is hard for me, as an infomo-junkie). Save your $60+ and go buy a gym membership, splurge at your local farmers’ market or tuck it away for that goal bikini you’ve had your eye on!

I suppose the phrase "there are no magic pills for weight loss," is no longer sufficient. So ... FYI, there aren’t any magic crystals either.
