Adele Covers Vogue, Talks Industry's Obsession With Weight

23-year-old British singer, Adele, has captivated many with her astounding vocal ability and soulful ballads. Catering to a fan base that transcends her homecountry, the idea of a popular singer not fitting the standard, slim mode - has continued to amaze ... or confuse?

Now, it's no secret that the entertainment industry is not kind or as accepting of plus-size women, as they are men of size (see: Rick Ross and his moobs). And if you happen to breakthrough with a record deal or acting gig, your body will eventually become the 'concern' of others. Well, Adele's not having it! Covering the October 2011 issue of Vogue UK, the Set Fire to the Rain performer refuses to let people's thoughts of her body, overshadow her talent. She shares:
“I’ve seen people where it rules their lives, who want to be thinner or have bigger boobs, and how it wears them down. And I don’t want that in my life. I have insecurities, of course, but I don’t hang out with anyone who points them out to me.”
The 10 x platinum artist also discusses her weight, which she has been outspoken of, in defense of mindless critics:
"My life is full of drama and I won't have time to worry about something as petty as what I look like," she told the magazine. "I don't like going to the gym. I like eating fine foods and drinking nice wine. Even if I had a really good figure, I don't think I'd get my t*** and a** out for no one."
Welp.

  1. Dah well, I guess Weight Watchers can scratch her off their list of potential spokespersons.

  2. Welp, I kinda understand what she's saying, but it's not just about "what you look like". It's about health. I just hope she can balance out her love for fine food and drink with that more important health concept.

  3. Hey Josie! I totally agree. Her comments brought up some inspiration for a follow-up post, to that frame of thinking. While I doubt her critics are worried about her health ... I'd think it would be okay for her to. Then again, that may be a part of her life that she wants to keep segregated from her limelight persona. Which, I don't think I could blame her.

  4. Adele rocks! As a big girl, I'm extra supportive because I can only imagine the pressure she faces. And she not only has to deal with it in the UK, but America, and everywhere else, too.

I'm in agreeance with YumYucky/Josie, too. It should never be about just looks, but considering the field she's in, everything's about looks. I think her responses come off a little blunt, out of frustration.

  5. I agree that the entertainment industry places a higher emphasis on image and not enough on talent. I am so happy that the shallow powers that be are consistently proven wrong every time Adele opens her mouth to sing. She looks amazing in Vogue by the way!

  6. I love that she won't change for anyone. As long as she is healthy and happy, it's fine by me. :) x

  7. Fine wine, FTW!

But seriously, Adele is a great performer and I'm so glad she's getting her shine. She's a beautiful girl, and people should really not get hung up on her size. Besides, a lot of us couldn't care less... I mean, have you heard her sing?! Her voice, speaks for itself, literally.

  8. Nice post. I think we all need to make sure WE are addressing our health needs and everybody else needs to do the same. I have no time or business telling any1 else what they need to do for their health or body.
